In the how the hell did I miss this column
From the Independent Florida Alligator today:
What students learn about evolution in books is "fake" and has no scientific value, a Turkish neurosurgeon said to about 50 students Tuesday.
Human life is a result of Allah, not evolution, said Dr. Oktar Babuna, a controversial Muslim speaker.
In his speech, which was sponsored by Islam on Campus and cost $3,000, Babuna argued against Darwinism and said the only way to understand life on Earth is through Allah and the teachings of the Koran. Babuna said it is scientifically impossible for evolution to have occurred.
Yes, well Dr Dino says the only way to understand life on earth is to study God and the bible and the Discovery institute is telling us to study biology but think about an intelligent designer manufacturing parts.
he goes on
To further prove his point, he said fish could never have transformed into land animals because their internal systems are entirely different than those of land animals.
They paid to bring this guy in??? I guess a neurosurgeon with this level of biological knowledge has to make money somehow. I don't know how I missed this talk, but I am damn sure glad I did. Looking forward to the letters. The nice thing is that the reported response to his talk in the paper is largely negative and they responded a lot better than the gator basketball team.

It's interesting to run into Muslim creationists in the US. But then again, creationism is quite common in the Muslim world as a whole. I've been writing about the subject for years now, and a book I've just published, An Illusion of Harmony: Science and Religion in Islam, addresses Islamic creationism in detail.
After living in the Middle East for the last 3 years, I have been shocked to see the how rampant the total lack of education is out here.
A big part of the problem is that the illiteracy rate is astounding. Even worse, the people who can read rarely do; there is no book culture out here to speak of.
So, you are left with a population that already widely perpetuates wild rumors as reality having to listen to people like this for their scientific knowledge.
One thing is certain, the recent increase in 'islamic creation' stories in the evolutionary blog world is not an insignificant warning to the growing islamic jihad against Western civilization.
If you thought IDer's were dangerous, you are in for a real shock when you see what their muslim counterparts are capable of. I know I was.
ID has to play within the bounds of our society. Right now that means working the political-legal game in way that does not betray its true intentions to the general public. The truth is that the ID want to be like Islam in that reality is determined by decree.

Another neurosurgeon? Orac will have a fit! Does this Bozo have any connection with Harun Yahya?
Dr. Oktar Babuna is a follower of Harun Yahya whose real name is Adnan Oktar.
Harun Yahya is the biggest dishonest and liar you can ever see on earth. He is the combination of Ken Ham, Duane Gish, Phillip Johnson, Kent Hovind, Jonathan Wells, Michael Behe, William Dembski, Henry Morris and Jonathan Sarfati.
BTW I hope Taner Edis considers of writing about this subject in Turkish. In Turkey people are misinformed by Harun Yahya bullshit and nobody is trying to write something against his full of crap books. In my blog I am writing my articles rebuting him but it is not enough. Scientists should do this. They have the reponsibility of rebuting the creationist lies.
I happened to run into a Harun Yahya video on youtube the other day. As one would expect, it's trash.

Dr. Oktar Babuna is a member of the BAV (which stands for "Science Research Foundation"), which has a nasty reputation in Turkey for attacking evolutionists. "[B]eginning in 1998, BAV spearheaded an effort to attack Turkish academics who taught Darwinian theory. Professors there say they were harassed and threatened, and some of them were slandered in fliers that labeled them "Maoists" for teaching evolution. In 1999, six of the professors won a civil court case against BAV for defamation and were awarded $4,000 each... "There is no fight against the creationists now. They have won the war," Sayin tells the Pitch from his home in Istanbul. "In 1998, I was able to motivate six members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences to speak out against the creationist movement. Today, it's impossible to motivate anyone. They're afraid they'll be attacked by the radical Islamists and the BAV."

Despite their tactics and despite the terrorism coming from Muslim fanatics, Harun Yahya has been claiming that evolution is the root of terrorism.
Nevertheless, the Kansas State School Board flew in a spokesperson from BAV to "testify" for the creationists. Apparently, they wanted a non-Christian creationist so they could claim they were being inclusive.
