Budget finalized

Today is likely going to be the last day of the legislative session in Tallahassee and so we can expect some decisions regarding the budget plan at UF within the next two weeks (if not sooner). Things at UF are strangely silent as one might expect during break week.

From the rumor mill I am hearing the Communication Science and Disorders (of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) will be merged (or partially merged) into the College of Health Professions. That means at least some of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences vertical changes are taking place. I don't know (and have not heard) where that leaves religion and geological sciences, but I can tell you no one around here is very comfortable.

In the meantime, Money Magazine has a nice article on Public Universities featuring our Department as the lead in.

While looking over the budget proposals, I noticed the universitywide section. Within that, I noticed a few which could be implemented without the loss of departments or cutting employees. There would be some monetary sacrifices, but it's better than being unemployed. Immediately, I wondered if Machen would take any of those into consideration.

But, reality kicked back in when I remembered what Machen had said at the last Faculty Union meeting. Those universitywide suggestions were there as talking points, nothing more. He had no real interest in using any of them. Why? Because his agenda for change would be interrupted. Programs, units and faculty which he sees as a roadblock to his plans could be saved. That cannot happen. Remember, this financial situation gives him the excuse for making cuts.

I still have to wonder, though, why he allowed those suggestions to be published on the web site if they weren't going to be used.

Luckily Dan's endless hypocrisy & online activity made him worthy of his own entry and it nicely sums up Dan Lirette's awful behavior while he was busy condemning others to hell - hey its easier than confronting your own vile actions. Right Dan?
